Simply stated, the raw materials used to manufacture cement are ground, mixed, dried, heated and then sintered in a rotating furnace called a kiln where temperatures reach 1500 ºC (2,732 °F). The intense heat converts the partially molten raw materials into pellets called clinker. After adding gypsum the mixture is ground to the extremely fine grey powder called portland cement.
